Background: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia arrived at Mombasa's Port Reitz Airport in Kenya on Sunday, June 7, on the start of a five-day official visit. He is to have talks with Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta who was waiting at the airport to greet the Emperor.
The Emperor was on his way to Kenya after a two-day visit to Cairo, during which he had talks with President Nasser. He stopped briefly in Nairobi, where he was joined on the fight by Kenyan Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi before continuing to Mombasa on the Indian Ocean.
After being greeted at the airport and reviewing the Guard of Honour, the Emperor was accompanied by President Kenyatta to State House, Mombasa, where they will stay during the Emperor's visit.
Flags of the two countries and decorations lined the route from the airport to State House, and thousands of people, including schoolchildren, cheered the two leaders. Displays of traditional dancing were performed for the Emperor's arrival.
The two leaders are expected to review bilateral relations and African and international affairs during their talks. A statement by the Kenya Foreign Ministry described the visit as "friendly and official."
