Background: Amidst the confusion of Israel's invasion of Lebanon, several hundred Iranian Revolutionary Guards have set up headquarters in the ancient Lebanese city of Baalbek. In full uniform, the armed guards are spreading the Fundamentalist Moslem faith among the city's largely Shia Moslem population on behalf of Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic revolution. It is unclear when or from where the Iranians arrived in Baalbek, but recently a Revolutionary Guard was reported as saying he thought they arrived two months ago and did not know if he had come through Syria because they had travelled at night. The Guards have opened a propaganda office in Baalbek and are giving lessons from the Koran (sacred book of Islam) to children. The city is strewn with placards, wall posters and banners denouncing Israeli and United States "imperialism". Baalbek people have been largely unresponsive to these sentiments although the Guards' presence has been felt. To commemorate the death of Husain, grandson of the Prophet, the Guards closed off the streets of the city. Machinegun posts, reinforced with sandbags and earth, protect their offices and Guards constantly patrol Baalbek's streets.
