  • Description

WILLIE LUDICK, A 24-YEAR-OLD "SOUTHPAW" FROM VEREENIGING, SOUTH AFRICA, GAINED A CLOSE POINTS DECISION OVER JEAN JOSSELIN OF FRANCE FOR THE VACANT WORLD WELTERWEIGHT TITLE AT THE WEMBLEY STADIUM IN JOHANNESBURG ON SATURDAY NIGHT. THE FIGHT WENT TO THE FULL 15 ROUNDS AND COMMENTATORS DESCRIBED IT AS "A BLOODBATH".

RINGSIDE COMMENTATORS DESCRIBED THE FIGHT AS A BLOODBATH. IN THE SECOND ROUND THE FRENCHMAN OPENED A CUT ABOVE LUDICK'S RIGHT EYE, AND BY THE END BOTH MEN WERE SPATTERED WITH BLOOD.

ON POINTS, THE FIGHT WAS DESPERATELY CLOSE, AND SOME OBSERVERS FELT THAT THE FINAL SWING IN LUDICK'S FAVOUR DIDN'T COME UNTIL THE FIFTEENTH ROUND. UP TO THAT POINT THE TWO BOXERS ENJOYED VARIABLE FORTUNE.

AT THE START LUDICK BOXED THE RIGHT FIGHT. HE ALLOWED THE FRENCHMAN TO COME TO HIM, AND PROBING WITH HIS RIGHT, MOUNTED UP THE POINTS. BUT AT CLOSE QUARTERS JOSSELIN WAS THE MASTER, AND LUDICK UNACCOUNTABLY CHANGED HIS TACTICS AND STARTED TO CHASE THE FRENCHMAN. THIS GAVE JOSSELIN A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, AND IN THE SEVENTH LUDICK WENT DOWN FOR A COUNT OF EIGHT AFTER EVER ESTIMATING THE EFFECTS OF A HEFTY LEFT TO THE FRENCHMAN'S JAW. SOMEHOW LUDICK STRUGGLED UP AFTER EIGHT AND GOT THROUGH THE REST OF THE ROUND. BY THIS TIME BOTH BOXERS WERE BATTERED WITH RED BLOTCHES FROM HAIR TO TOES. IT MADE AN UGLY SIGHT, AND AT THIS POINT LUDICK LOOKED AS THOUGH HE WAS ON THE WAY OUT. JOSSELIN REMAINED IN COMMAND FOR THE NINTH ROUND, AND IN THE TENTH BOTH MEN WERE TRYING DESPERATELY TO END THE MATCH. THEY STOOD TOE-TO-TOE EXCHANGING BLOW FOR BLOW. FROM THEN ON LUDICK REVERTED TO THE TACTICS WHICH HAD GAINED HIM HIS EARLY POINT, AND THIS MAY HAVE GIVEN HIM THE TITLE FOR HE WAS DEFINITELY ON TOP WHEN HE KEPT AWAY FROM JOSSELIN'S FIERCE CLOSE-QUARTER PUNCHES AND JABS TO THE BODY.

JOSSELIN WAS A GAME FIGHTER, AND THOUGH ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS IN THE LATTER STAGES HE SEEMED A SPENT FORCE, SOMEHOW HE MANAGED TO KEEP GOING AND WREST BACK THE INITIATIVE FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN.

BUT IN THE FIFTEENTH, AND FINAL, ROUND THE BOUT EXPLODED BACK INTO LUDICK'S FAVOUR WHEN HE CAUGHT THE FRENCHMAN WITH A DAMAGING LEFT, WHICH PUT JOSSELIN DOWN FOR A COUNT OF NINE. IT WAS THIS BLOW, AFTER ONE MINUTE AND 20 SECONDS OF THE FINAL ROUND, WHICH MAY HAVE GIVEN LUDICK THE NARROW POINTS VICTORY.

BOTH MEN WERE GIVEN A GREAT RECEPTION BY THE 20,000 SPECTATORS, AND THE RING WAS INVADED BY PRESS AND PUBLIC AS THE RESULT WAS ANNOUNCED.
