INTRODUCTION: There have been reports of more revenge killings in Lebanon for the death of the left-wing leader, Kamal Jumblatt. His death came as a severe shock to the Palestinians meeting in Cairo who were close allies of Mr. Jumblatt's. The Palestine National Council (PNC) -- Palestine Parliament-in-Exile -- have been meeting in the Egyptian capital to discuss a strategy for the future.
SYNOPSIS: The Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Yasser Arafat, has played a major part in the PNC discussions. On Thursday (17 March), Mr. Arafat received a medal for efforts to achieve international peace. Earlier in the day, the Palestinian leader had addressed the meeting. He attached the United States for pouring billions of dollars in aid into Israel each year. But he also confirmed that contacts had been made between Palestinian envoys and members of the Israeli peace committee. He added though that the PLO was firm in its aim to create a secular state. Palestinian spokesman, Mr. Mahmoud el-Labadi, gave further details of Mrs. Arafat's speech.
