The world's newest nation - the Seychelles - became the 48th member of the Organisation of African Unity at a ceremony at Moka, Mauritius, on Tuesday (29 June).

SYNOPSIS: As the flags of the 47 existing member nations fluttered in the breeze, the Seychelles delegation waited to see their new blue, red and white emblem hoisted to join the others. The ceremony came only hours after their country had gained its independence from Britain after 166 years of colonial rule. The 27th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers of the OAU is currently being held in Moka.

With their membership publicly proclaimed, it was time for the Seychelles delegation to be warmly welcomed to the organisation by session chairman, Sir Harold Walter. At midnight on Monday (28 June) the Duke of Gloucester, representing Britain, officially handed the reins of government over to the Seychelles' first president, James Mancham. A coalition government has been formed by the islands' two main political parties with Mr Albert Rene as prime minister. At a news conference shortly after his induction, Mr Mancham said, that his country was dedicated to the idea of making the Indian Ocean a zone of peace. Big nations should keep out of the area, he said.

Mr Mancham's personal envoy to the OAU, Mr Matheiu Servina, said the Seychelles was keen to assist in the struggle for the total liberation of the African continent and pledged its participatation in all constructive moves to eradicate colonialism and racism.
