Background: Motor cycle racing -- and world champion, Johnny Cecotto won the British 750 c.c. Grand Prix on Sunday (22 April) on a Yamaha. For the twenty-three-year-old Venezuelan, it was his first victory at the Brands Hatch track.

SYNOPSIS: The British Grand Prix was the second round of this season's world championship, and it was raced in two stages. Cecotto was on bike number four.

Cecotto got off to a good start, leading the field in the early stages and setting a lap record of one minute thirty-four point two seconds, two tenths of a second inside the old mark. He took the first race fifteen seconds from Markku Matikainen of Finland.

The Venezuelan again went into the front quickly in the second leg. After Matikainen had been forced to retire, his only real challenge came from number of seven, Mike Baldwin of the United States.

The second part of the race was suspended after twelve laps when Frenchman Christian Sarron came off a at a bend and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Officials re-started the race, cleared the wreckage of Sarron's bike from the track, and it was plain sailing for Cecotto from then on.

Although Baldwin followed Cecotto closely, it was Australian, Gregg Hanson who finished second overall. Cecotto's win gave him a total of fifty-two points in the championships -- and a clear lead.
