  • Description

To the people of Israel their navy is often regarded as the force whose praises remain unsung. Unlike the other branches of the armed forces, the Israeli Navy can claim few spectacular coups, although it played a significant role in the abortive suez invasion in 1956.

However, despite the little publicity it receives the Israeli Navy, according to government officials, is performing a vital defence role along a rugged and remote coastline from Syria in the North to Port Said in the south. And among the silent heroes of the forces are members of the Underwater Defence Unit -- the frogmen.

The underwater branch was established nearly ten years ago. It specific roles are defence of port installations, removal or destruction of underwater obstacles and repair of vessels. The defence role -- similar to that of commandos -- calls for a high degree of fitness, and the men, all volunteers, undergo regular and rigorous training.
