  • Description

AGRICULTURAL MINISTERS OF THE SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES BEGAN MEETING IN BRUSSELS TODAY (MONDAY) FOR TALKS ON GRAIN PRICES. IT'S TO BE A THREE-DAY MEETING WITH THE QUESTION OF GRAIN PRICES BEING THE KEY ISSUE ON AN AGENDA DEALING WITH PRICES FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS.

ALTHOUGH NO DECISION IS TO BE TAKEN AT THE CONFERENCE, THE TALKS ARE CONSIDERED AS VITAL IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THE "SIX" NAMED DECEMBER 15 AS THE DEADLINE FOR AGREEMENT ON THE COMMON PRICING ARRANGEMENT.

THE MEETING OPENED WITH A DEGREE OF TENSION AS FRANCE DECLARED THAT UNLESS PROGRESS TOWARDS AGREEMENT WAS MADE, IT WOULD NOT OFFER HELP IN CONTINUING NEGOTIATIONS TOWARDS EUROPEAN INTEGRA INTEGRATION OR ASSIST WITH PROGRESS AT THE "KENNEDY ROUND" OF TARIFF CUTTING TALKS IN GENEVA.

HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT ALREADY THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE OF PROGRESS AT THE MEETING. SIGNOR FERRARI-AGRADI, ITALY'S AGRICULTURE MINISTER, TOLD THE MEETING THAT ITALY OPPOSED THE INTRODUCTION OF COMMON GRAIN PRICES BEFORE 1970. HE SAID ANY AGREEMENT WOULD LEAD TO A PRICE RISE AND THIS WOULD SERIOUSLY AFFECT ITALY'S PRIMARY INDUSTRY.

THE CLIMAX TO THE COMMON MARKET DIALOGUE ON GRAIN PRICES IS DUE ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF NEXT MONTH WHEN THE COMMON MARKET COUNCIL OF MINISTRIES MEETS IN A BID TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.
