  • Description

President Amin has ordered the first extradition from Uganda of a Zaire subject in order, he says, to foster good relations between the two neighbouring African countries.

On Wednesday (July 26), Regimental Sergeant Major Djabil Vayangalito of the Zaire Army was put aboard a military aircraft at Entebbe Airport and flown to the Bunya Army barracks in Eastern Zaire. He is accused of stealing 20,000 shillings (about GBP1,000 sterling) from the Zaire Army.

President Amin called the Zaire Ambassador to State House in Entebbe and explained that he had ordered the deportation because he did not want any misunderstanding to compromise the good relations between Uganda and Zaire. The countries do not have a formal extradition agreement.

President Amin's action was taken in the hope that the Zaire government would reciprocate and return wanted Ugandans who had fled into Zaire.
