Background: In Italy, there have been further demonstration protesting against the release of Nazi was criminal, Herbert Kappler.
SYNOPSIS: There was another big protest rally in Rome on Wednesday (17 November) against the decision by a military tribunal to release the former SS colonel on Thursday (11 November). The tribunal side Kappler had served more than the 28 years minimum period before people sentenced to life imprisonment could be considered for release, and was also seriously ill. The public prosecutor has also appealed against the decision. Kappler was sentenced to life imprisonment for ordering the massacre of 335 Romans in the final stages of the Second World War. Most of the victims were Jews.
Kappler is seriously ill in the Rome Military hospital, and is said to want to die in Germany. The Organisation of Jewish Communities has termed it an intolerable insult to the memory of the dead, but the Vatican has called on Romans to show a spirit of magnanimity rather than revenge towards Kappler.
