In Jerusalem, the cradle of the Christian religion, Easter Sunday was celebrated in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Pilgrims of the Roman Catholic, greek Orthodox and Coptic churches held services at the church during the day.
In the morning, Pontifical High mass was celebrated by the Latin Patriarch, Giaccomo Giuseppe Baltritti. The ceremony began with processions around the tomb of Christ, led by the Patriarch. An Israeli government representative, and the Commander of the Jerusalem Police took part, in accordance with tradition. The government was represented by Mr. Toledano, the Prime Minister's advisor on Arab Affairs. Diplomats from Catholic countries posted in Israel also attended.
Following the service, a colourful procession of clergymen, choirs and scouts accompanied the Patriarch from the Holy Sepulchre to the Latin Patriarchate in the Old City.
