  • Description

President and Mrs Nixon met Queen Elizabeth and the British Prime Minister Edward Heath today (Saturday) during the United States' leader's six-hour stop-over in the United Kingdom. As well as an informal luncheon, President Nixon held talks on the international situation with British leaders.

The President's visit to Britain took place amid intensive security precautions. President Nixon flew by helicopter from London airport to the Prime Minister's country resident of Chequers. There, the two leaders, who were later joined by British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home, were reported to have discussed Soviet intentions throughout the world, in particular Russian Naval presence in the Indian Ocean. Among other topics reported to have been discussed was the Middle-East situation and the two leaders are said to have agreed on the desirability of trying to get indirect Arab-Israeli talks started again.

Queen Elizabeth stayed for two hours at Chequers -- and after she left the talks continued. Mrs Nixon, who had flown to Chequers after visiting the residence of the American Ambassador in Britain, renewed her acquaintance with the Queen over a typically English lunch of Dover sole and roast beef.

President Nixon had arrived in London from Spain during his eight-day tour of five European countries. After the meeting at Chequers he flew by helicopter to London airport and continued on to Ireland.
