    THAILAND'S NAM PONG MULTI-PURPOSE PROJECT NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION IS SAID TO BE THE EIGHTH LARGEST OF ITS TYPE IN THE WORLD. IT FITTINGLY SYMBOLISES THAILAND'S PRESENT SURE TOWARDS INDUSTRIALISATION. WHEN THE PROJECT IS COMPLETED IN 1967, THAILAND WILL HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF LOW COST POWER NEEDED FOR FUTURE INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION.

    THE PROJECT IS BEING CONSTRUCTED IN KHON KAEN PROVINCE, ABOUT 350 MILES NORTH EAST OF BANGKOK. IT CONSISTS OF A DAM, A HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER PLANT AND AN IRRIGATION DAM. NAM PONG IS THE LARGEST TRIBUTARY OF THE NAM CHEE RIVER, WHICH IS IN TURN A TRIBUTARY OF THE MEKONG RIVER.

    THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION, EXCLUDING IRRIGATION CANALS, IS ESTIMATED AT 468.12 MILLION AND (U.S. $22.5 MILLION). FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE COME FROM THE UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR ASIA AND THE FAR EAST, 11 DIFFERENT UNITED NATIONS AGENCIES AND 14 COUNTRIES.

    SINCE THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, THERE HAVE BEEN ACUTE POWER SHORTAGE IN THAILAND. THE GOVERNMENT HAS TRIED TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION BY RE-BUILDING THE POWERPLANTS BOMBED OUT DURING THE WAR AND INSTALLING NEW GENERATING.
