  • Description

The yacht "Sceptre", which is to represent Britain in the American Cup Races in September, was on view to reporters and cameramen at Cowes to-day. Afterwards she sailed to Gosport for a final overhaul.

At her moorings, the SCEPTRE looked like any other 12-metre racing yacht. But her hull is built of one-and-a-half inch mahogany planking on alternate frames of steel and oak.

Her cockpit is larger than usual, and her Terylene sails spread over 2-thousand square feet. At Cowes, Peter Marshall spoke to Mr. Goodson, Chairman of the Syndicate sponsoring SCEPTRE.

And from Cowes, the SCEPTRE will sail across the Atlantic to the coast off Rhode Island, where America's classic yacht race from Newport across the ocean to Bermuda is nearing its end.

On Saturday 110-yachts left the shelter of Newport for the 635 mile run to Bermuda. This was the largest fleet ever to assemble in the history of the race.

The entries included yachts from Uruguay and Argentina, and all the top names of racing on the other side of the Atlantic were represented.

The race began in choppy seas, and three of the boats heeled over but managed to right themselves.

The first yachts are expected to reach Bermuda early to-morrow morning.
