  • Description

In South Vietnam, the Vietnamisation of the war took another step forward on Friday when the United States Air Force turned over 24 transport aircraft to the South Vietnamese.

The C-123 aircraft is the biggest presented to the South Vietnamese Air Force. The handover took place at a ceremony at Saigon's Tan Son Nhut airport.

The transfer of arms, equipment and bases is now becoming a familiar event in South Vietnam-with the presentation of medals to the departing Americans and the parading of colours by the Vietnamese taking over from them.

Already the South Vietnamese fly American-donated C.47 and C-119 transporters as well as supersonic Freedom fighters, A-37 bombers, Skyraiders and numerous type of helicopters.

In recent months, the South Vietnamese Air Force has undertaken an increasing burden in the aerial war and now flies more than half of all missions in the strategic Mekong Delta alone.
