  • Description

Peace in the Middle East and the question of equating Zionism with racism were the main topics of discussions held in Amman on Saturday (6 December) by Jordanian King Hussein and Vatican representatives.

The Vatican representative to the East and West Banks and West of Jordan, Archbishop William Carew, based in Jerusalem, and Bishop Nihmeh Al-Simaa met King Hussein in Basmane Palace.

Bishop Al-Simaa was among was among the signatories to a cable sent late in November to the World Council of Churches (WCC) expressing concern at the Council's appeal to the United Nations to rescind its resolution equating Zionism to racism.

He joined Christian and Moslem leaders in saying he has attached great hope that the conference held by the WCC would have sided with justice on the Palestine tragedy and the preservation of sacred places against desecration.

One of the sacred places in question is the Dome of the Rock, one of the oldest Moslem shrines which is in jerusalem. King Hussein displayed a model of the shrine at the meeting.
