    A demonstration organised by the Stalinist People's Democratic Union (UDP) was held in the town of Setubal, 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Lisbon, on sunday (7 March) to commemorate the death of one of their young militants a year ago.

    Although the demonstration had been banned by local police it still went ahead and there were no incidents.

    About 100 listened to leaders addressing the crowd and all stood for one minute's silence in memory of the leftist youth shot during the rally on 7 March last year.

    The youth was killed when a riot broke out during a rally by Centrist Popular Democrats. The trouble occurred when police tried to protect PPO members from attacks by young leftists.

    SYNOPSIS: The town of Setubal, fifty kilometers south of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, where about one hundred people took apart in a demonstration organised by the Stalinist People's Democratic Union on Sunday.

    The demonstration was held to commemorate the death a year ago on the same spot of a young leftist. The you was shot during a riot between police and UDP members. police were trying to protect Centrist Popular Democrats who were holding a rally and being harassed by UDP members when the shooting took place.

    A number of western journalists were beaten up during the riot. An official enquiry was held afterwards but all police involved were cleared.

    However leftists have rejected the findings.
