  • Description

A FRENCH FIRM HAS BUILT AND FLOWN WHAT IS REPUTED TO BE THE WORLD'S FIRST ALL FIBRE-GLASS PLANE.

THE PLANE, A FOUR SEATER WASSMER, HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED WITH AN ALL FIBRE-GLASS BODY AND IT IS CLAIMED THAT THIS IS THE FIRST CONSTRUCTION OF THIS TYPE IN THE WORLD. THE COMPANY MAKING THE PLANE REPORT THAT FIBRE-GLASS WAS CHEAPER TO USE THAN THE NORMAL ALL METAL CONSTRUCTION AND THAT CONSTRUCTION TIME OF THE BODY WAS CUT BY 20%. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS EASIER TO TRAIN LABOURERS TO USE THE RELATIVELY SIMPLE TECHNIQUE OF FABRICATING PARTS FROM FIBRE-GLASS.

THE PROTOTYPE, WHICH TOOK FOUR YEARS TO DEVELOP, IS EXPECTED TO BE IN COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION IN ABOUT TWO YEARS WHEN IT SHOULD COST BETWEEN 60 AND 70 THOUSAND FRANCS (GBP4,400 - 5,800). THE PLANE, WHICH IS POWERED BY A SINGLE 150 HORSE-POWER LYCOMING ENGINE, HAS A RANGE OF 620 MILES (1000 KM) AND A CRUISING SPEED OF 160 M.P.H. (260 KMS/HR).
