  • Description

The situation in the Middle East was the centre of discussions between Jordan's King Hussein and the Soviet Union's special representative at the geneva peace conference, Mr. Vladimir Vinogradov, when they met for talks in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Saturday (6 December).

Mr. Vinogradov arrived in Amman on the previous day, continuing his current Middle East tour. He said the common Soviet-Jordanian struggle on behalf of the Arab cause made consultations with Jordan's leaders essential.

The Soviet ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Alexei Voronin, also attended the talks with King Hussein. Later it was announced that an official Jordanian delegation will visit the Soviet Union towards the middle of January. This follows a Jordanian official announcement earlier in the week that King Hussein has accepted an invitation by Soviet leaders to visit Moscow next summer to develop and consolidate relations between the two countries.

Jordan recently refused to sign a deal with the United States for the purchase of 14 Hawk anti-aircraft missiles. A government spokesman said that the terms of the deal's covering letter -- which included that the weapons should be used for defensive purposes only -- touched upon "national dignity".

The two sides discussed Jordan's role in the Middle East and the Soviet Union's stand on the issue. Later it was announced that an official Jordanian delegation will visit the Soviet Union next month for talks. King Hussein himself recently accepted an invitation from Soviet leaders to visit Moscow next summer.
