  • Description

AN AVERAGE OF 74 PER CENT WENT TO POLLS ON SUNDAY (TOTAL ELIGIBLE VOTERS 65 MILLIONS). THE SCANDAL SCARRED LIBERAL-DEMOCRATIC PARTY MADE A GOOD SHOWING IN THE INITIAL VOTE COUNT OF SUNDAY'S 31ST GENERAL ELECTION FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. VOTE TABULATIONS AS OF 12:00 NOON MONDAY SHOWED THAT 242 CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES WERE SUCCESSFUL AT THE POLLS. THE JAPAN SOCIALIST PARTY MEANWHILE CAME OUT WITH 102 SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES. PRIME MINISTER EISAKU SATO AND OTHER LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC LEADERS, OBVIOUSLY ELATED OVER THE FAVOURABLE RETURNS, BELIEVED THAT THEIR PARTY WOULD GAIN 280 OF THE 486 LOWER HOUSE SEATS. THE LDP STRENGTH IN THE LAST HOUSE WAS 278. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE SPEAKER OF THE LOWER HOUSE KENTARO AYABE, LOST IN THE ELECTION. HIS DEFEAT MEANT A SETBACK FOR ONE OF THE LDP FACTIONS CRITICAL OF PRIME MINISTER SATO, OF WHICH AYABE IS A MEMBER. MEANWHILE BOTH PRIME MINISTER EISAKU SATO AND JAPAN SOCIALIST PARTY CHAIRMAN KOZO SASAKI PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFULLY RETURNED TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES A FEW HOURS AFTER THE VOTE COUNTING WAS STARTED SUNDAY NIGHT.
