  • Description

Kenya's brilliant middle-distance runner gave a good account of himself during his country's athletics tour of Japan which ended on Sunday (7 May 1972).

In Sunday's final events at Tokyo's Olympic Stadium, Keino won the 1,500 metres race with a time of three minutes 45.8 seconds. But in the 5,000 metres steeplechase, Keino was well-beaten by fellow countryman Ben Jipcho.

Keino a 32-year old police inspector, won the 1,500 metres at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. His performance during the Japanese tour led to speculation that he'll be representing Kenya in this year's Olympics in Munich, West Germany.

The vice-chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee, Mr. Musembi Mbathi, said in Tokyo that Keino "may take part in the 1,500 metres and may possibly go for the steeplechase, but we won't make a decision until July".
