    In Geneva, the wife of Soviet dissident, Anatoly Shcharansky, has called for a political, scientific and sporting boycott of the Soviet Union because of its treatment of human rights campaigners. On Thursday (13 July) Mrs. Avital Shcharansky met the United States Secretary of State Cyrus Vance.

    SYNOPSIS: Mrs Shcharansky also attended a service in a Geneva synagogue to pray for persecuted Jews in the Soviet Union.

    About 500 people attended the ceremony and demonstrators in the synagogue protested against the Soviet trials. Mrs Shcharansky who lives is Israel, attended as a member of the congregation and didn't play any special role in the proceedings.

    Later, 26-year-old Mrs Shcharansky told reporters that the International Olympic Committee should switch the 1980 Games from Moscow to Montreal. And she urged sportsmen to boycott from if they went ahead in the Soviet Union. She also said that Mr. Vance had promised her that the United States would do all it could to secure the release of her husband.
