  • Description

Guts Ishimatsu of Japan successfully defended his World Boxing Council's lightweight title against Ken Buchanan of Scotland on Thursday (27 February), but admitted after the fight that the contest was so close it could have ended in a draw.

Buchanan, who at 29 was the top-rated contender for the title and the World Boxing Association's title holder for two years, said he thought he had "done enough to win".

The points decision for Ishimatsu was unanimous but close. The American referee scored it at 144-142, the British judge even closer at 145-144, while the Japanese judge put it at 149-144.

Buchanan was on the attack for much of the fight but was troubled by an injury he had received when his left eye was gouged during sparring rounds earlier in the week. He had trouble connecting with his strong right.

Buchanan later said the champion was better than he imagined, and Ishimatsu said, while praising the Scotsman's ringcraft, that most of Buchanan's punches had not worried him.
