    THE CARD - A 15,000-TON AMERICAN NAVY TRANSPORT SHIP, ROCKED BY A MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION IN THE POST OF SAIGON EARLY MORNING MAY 2 IS RESTING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SAIGON RIVER WITH A LIST.

    THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR COMMUNIST VIET CONG SABOTAGED ATTEMPTS IN THE VIETNAM WAR AND CAME ONLY A FEW HOURS AFTER MAY DAY, AN IMPORTANT VIET CONG HOLIDAY.

    THE EXPLOSION BLEW A HOLE 28-FOOT LONG AND ABOUT FOUR FOOT HIGH, WAS APPARENTLY EXTERNAL AND IT WAS PRESUMED TO BE FROM A FIXED CHARGED PLACED AGAINST THE HULL. THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES.

    THE SHIP, A CONVERTED FORMER AIRCRAFT CARRIER, WENT DOWN MORE THAN 20 FEET TO REST ON THE BOTTOM AT A DEPTH OF 48 FEET. SEVERAL COMPARTMENTS, INCLUDING THE ENGINE ROOM, DIESEL ROOM, PUMP ROOM AND PART OF THE SHAFT ALLEY WERE FLOODED AND SEALED OFF.

    CARD HAD BEEN SCHEDULED TO LEAVE SAIGON ON THE SAME DAY AFTER DELIVERING A CARGO OF AIRCRAFT AND TAKING ON SOME OUTDATED HELICOPTERS FOR RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES.

    SECURITY ABOARD THE VESSEL WAS SUPPLIED BY AMERICAN PERSONNEL AND ON THE WHARF VIETNAMESE MILITARY WERE ON GUARD.
