    Background: PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, USA

At least 15 people died on October 18 as fire swept through a New Jersey hotel soon after midnight. More than 55 people were injured, some seriously, as flames engulfed the nine-storey building. About two hundred people were in the hotel when the fire broke out. Police have detained a man in connection with fire, charging him with arson and murder. Television repairman Russell Conklin was arrested outside the blazing hotel where he had been a resident. The fire is said to be worst in the history of Paterson, which lies 16 kilometres west of New York City. A receptionist at the hotel discovered the fire when he saw smoke and flames coming through a bedroom door. Attempts were made to extinguish the blaze, but the fire already had too much of a hold on the building. Eight people died in Paterson in 1982 in a case of arson.
