  • Description

DOMINICAN POLICE ARE HOLDING TEN PEOPLE ARRESTED DURING DEMONSTRATIONS WHICH DISRUPTED THE INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT JUAN BOSCH ON WEDNESDAY. BOSCH, A 53-YEAR-OLD NOVELIST AND INTELLECTUAL, IS THE REPUBLIC'S FIRST FREELY-ELECTED PRESIDENT IN 38 YEARS.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE STAGED BY SUPPORTERS OF THE VENEZUELAN LIBERATION FRONT -- THE GROUP WHICH RECENTLY PIRATED A VENEZUELAN FREIGHTER AND TOOK HER TO BRAZIL.

THE DEMONSTRATORS THREW SAND IN THE FACES OF DOMINICAN MARINES PARADING AND LATER, NEAR A REVIEWING STAND, CREATED SUCH AN UPROAR THAT AUTHORITIES ENDED THE PARADE PREMATURELY. PRESIDENT BOSCH, TOGETHER WITH UNITED STATES VICE-PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON, PRESIDENT ROMULO BETANCOURT OF VENEZUELA, AND OTHER DIGNITARIES, WERE TAKEN BY CAR TO SAFETY.

IN HIS ADDRESS, PRESIDENT BOSCH PLEDGED ECONOMIC REFORMS TO GIVE THE DOMINICAN PEOPLE A BETTER LIFE THAN THEY HAD UNDER THE TRUJILLO REGIME.
