In the growing controversy over Wimbledon in London on Sunday (24 June), Ilie Nastase and Australia's Ray Keldie appeared before the disciplinary committee of the Association of Tennis Professionals to say why they wouldn't take part in the players' boycott.

But it won't be cut and dried. Any decision will be a close-kept secret for more than a week. Roger Taylor was also facing possible trouble, too, for defying the boycott, but the association has been asked to drop any of the charges it may be considering against him. Taylor's lawyer said on Sunday that Taylor would explain his reasons to the disciplinary committee, and also accept any penalty that might be imposed.

But the continuing row over Wimbledon didn't interfere with the traditional pre-Wimbledon reception at the Hurlingham Club in London. The top stars of the game were there, all relaxing in the sun. Some played tennis, others tried their hand at mini-golf. Other just sat in deck chairs and sipped the afternoon away.

One of the most optimistic young players at the garden party was Sweden's tennis superboy, 17-year-old Bjorn Borg.

SYNOPSIS: The growing controversy over Wimbledon didn't stop the traditional pre-game reception thrown by the International Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain at the Hurlingham Club in London on Sunday.

While the music played. Ilie Nastase, who's re-seeded Number One for the men's title tried his tennis hand at mini golf, Australia's Evonne Goolagong lounged in a deck chair, and Chris Evert just took it easy. Over a cool drink, Sweden's 17-year-old superboy of Tennis, Bjorn Borg discussed his future.

Lesser-known players who've got a run because of the boycott took the chance to mix with both champions and tennis followers. Others just sipped the afternoon away.

For some of the top women tennis stars, a game of croquet... and for others....well, who needs garden parties anyway.
