  • Description

In Lebanon, former President Camille Chamoun spoke on Sunday (16 December) at a meeting organised by his National Liberal Party at an East Beirut College. Mr Chamoun's theme was - "Education for the new Generation".

SYNOPSIS: Mr Chamoun was greeted by a guard of militiamen of the National Liberal Party. He and other rights leaders continue to call for an end to Arab involvement in Lebanese affairs. Mr Chamoun himself has predicted an all-out violet showdown will occur if Palestinian guerrillas and Syrian troops are not removed from Lebanon. In his speech at the college, Mr. Chamoun attacked Lebanon's allies for not doing enough to help them solve their international crisis. Nevertheless, he said, Lebanon wills survive.

Mr Chamoun's speech was enthusiastically received by the audience, which included academics and rightist leaders, including Mr. Pierre Gemayel of the Falangist Party. Right-wing Christian parties regard the thirty-thousand-strong Syrian force in Lebanon as an army of occupation. The force remained after helping to end the 1975-76 civil war. Six Syrians, including three soldiers, were reported missing on Saturday (15 December) after straying into the rightist stronghold of East Beirut. And there were continued reports of shelling between rightist militias and their Palestinian-leftist adversaries in southern Lebanon.
