Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, leader of the victorious People's Action Party, was filmed by VISNEWS, June 1, as he went to Government House for discussions with Singapore Governor, Sir William Goode. The release of 8 PAP members detained under the security ordinance was on the agenda.
PAP won 43 of the 51 Singapore Assembly seats and will take office soon. Mr. Kee had refused to form a government - newly independent Singapore's first - until his party members had been released. After consultation with the British Government, Sir William Goode said they would be freed on June 4.
The left-wing PAP Government will be responsible for all policy except defence and foreign affairs. The latter two are the British Government's responsibility.
The large crowd outside Government House gave Mr. Lee the Merdeka, or Freedom salute. While they waited for him to re-appear the guard outside was changed.
Negotiations over Mr. Lee left the Governor and held a short Press conference.
Sir William Goode, last governor of Singapore, was sworn in, June 3, as Yang di Pertuan Negara, the title of Singapore's Head of State under the new constitution.
