  • Description

One of Britain's newest and most luxurious liners, the 42,000-tons 'Oriana' left Southampton, U.K., Dec 3, on her maiden voyage to Australia and North America. She will be away for three-and-a-half months.

The first leg of her voyage to Sydney, Australia, via the Suez Canal will take 27 days. Then, after a short cruise from Sydney into the Pacific, she goes to New Zealand, Suva, Honolulu, and the West coast of North America, and back to Southampton by the same route.

Soon after leaving Southampton, the 'Oriana' ran into heavy gales. In a radiophone conversation the master, Captain C. Edgecombe, said "It is a real test, and the slip is behaving very well. We have passed several ships hove-to before the gale, but we are doing only an occasional roll."
Five tiers of welded aluminium decks help to give 'Oriana' more speed, capacity, and comfort. Another feature of her design is the extensive use made of glass on the stern promenade decks.

Launched by Princess Alexandra at Barrow-in-Furness last November, the 'Oriana' was built at a cost of GBP14M to carry 630 first and 1,496 tourist-class passengers. Powered by steam turbines of 60,000 shaft horse-power, the twin propellers drive 'Oriana' at a service speed of 27.5 knots, but she can reach a maximum 36.64 knots.
