  • Description

Egypt celebrated Air Force Day on Saturday (2 November) in honour of the feats of its airmen during the 1973 October War and in memory of those killed during the war.

A military airport near Cairo was opened to the public and thousands of schoolchildren visited it to watch an aircraft display -- ranging from military helicopters to heavy bombers.

Pilots and crews were on hand to answer questions from the visiting youngsters.

Earlier in the day, a service was held at the Martyrs Memorial in memory of the airmen who died in action during the October War. The War Minister and Deputy Premier, Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail, and the Commander-in Chief of the Air force, Air Marshal Hosny Mubarak, attended the ceremony.

Air Force Day came at a time when Egypt's military leaders have said that they broken the "myth of Israeli invincibility in the air".
