    THE NATIONALIST CHINESE DEPUTY PREMIER, CHIANG CHING-KUO NARROWLY ESCAPED ASSASSINATION IN NEW YORK CITY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (FRIDAY, APRIL 24). THE BULLET MISSED CHAING CHING-KUO, THE SON OF NATIONALIST CHINESE LEADER CHIANG KAI-SHEK, AND HIT A REVOLVING DOOR OF THE PLAZA HOTEL.

    A POLICEMAN CRABBED A GUNMAN'S ARM A SHOT WAS FIRED, AND TWO MEN WERE TAKEN TO A NEARBY POLICE STATION. ONE WAS IDENTIFIED AS TZU-TSAI CHENG, AN ARCHITECT, HIS COMPANION, TENTATIVELY IDENTIFIED AS PETER HUANG, WAS LATER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION.

    THE TWO MEN HAD COME FROM ACROSS THE STREET WHERE ABOUT 50 NATIONALIST CHINESE WERE DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE CHINESE PREMIER. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE MEMBERS OF A GROUP DEMANDING INDEPENDENCE FOR FORMOSA WHICH WAS TAKEN OVER BY NATIONALIST FORCES AFTER CHIANG KAI-SHEK'S ARMIES FLED MAINLAND CHINA.

    CHAING CHING-KUO WENT ON WITH HIS TALK IN THE PLAZA HOTEL WITH THE AID OF AN INTERPRETER. HE FIRST THANKED THOSE PRESENT FOR THE FRIENDLY RECEPTION HE HAD RECEIVED, THEN WENT ON TO TALK ABOUT POLITICS. THE NATIONALIST CHINESE GOVERNMENT, HE SAID WAS NOT ONLY AN OBSTACLE TO AGGRESSION BUT AN ALTERNATIVE TO COMMUNISM. CHAING MADE NO REFERENCE TO THE ATTEMPTED SHOOTING.

    AFTER THE TALK, HE CONTINUED TO KEEP TO HIS SCHEDULE AND ATTENDED A TEA GIVEN IN HIS HONOUR BY THE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS. THE WORLD UNITED FORMOSANS ORGANISATION HAD SAID THAT THEY WOULD PICKET THE MEETING, BUT THE POLICE AND SECURITY MEN STANDING BY DID NOT ENCOUNTER ANY DEMONSTRATORS.

    IN WASHINGTON MR. RONALD ZIECLER PRESIDENT NIXON'S PRESS SECRETARY, SAID THAT THE PRESIDENT REGRETTED THE ATTACK AND WAS "PROFOUNDLY RELIEVED" THAT THE CHINESE PREMIER WAS UNHARMED.

    CHIANG ARRIVED IN THE U.S. ON APRIL 18 ON A 10-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS OUTSIDE THE PLAZA IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS TRONG CHAI SAID HE WAS A POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR AT ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE IN BROOKLYN.
