  • Description

French broadcasting technicians and journalists demonstrated in Paris on Wednesday (9 October) after a strike meeting at the Bourse du Travail (Employment Exchange)
They began an indefinite strike on Tuesday (8 October) over guarantees of employment when the French Broadcasting company (ORTF) splits into seven deferent units next year.

The broadcasting and technical unions fear that when ORTF splits, the jobs of those who do not come within the ORTF Statute of Employment, will be endangered. The unions claim that employees over 60 will be retired, while others will, at best, lose seniority and, at worst, their jobs, when the new independent radio and television channels start to rehire personnel.

The unions stress that they are not trying to force the French Government to rescind the law splitting ORTF into independent units, but that they wish to negotiate guarantees of employment for their members.

Under the law, whilst the ORTF employees are allowed to strike., they are not permitted to suspend broadcasting completely. On Tuesday a restricted programme of transmissions went out on radio and television in France.
