    THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF DEFENCE, MR. ROBERT MCNAMARA, HAS BEEN ON A FIVE-DAY FACT FINDING MISSION TO SOUTH VIETNAM. SEEN HERE ON HIS LAST FULL DAY IN THE COUNTRY, MR. MCNAMARA WAS INTRODUCED TO A RALLY AT HUE AIRPORT BY THE COUNTRY'S SOLDIER-PREMIER MAJOR-GENERAL NGUYEN KHANH.

    ALSO ON THE PLATFORM WAS THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO SOUTH VIETNAM, MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE, WHO SCORED A SURPRISE WIN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE'S REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY. MR. CABOT LODGE, WHOSE NAME WAS NOT EVEN ON THE BALLOT PAPER, TOOK 35 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST, BEATING BOTH GOVERNOR ROCKEFELLER, AND SENATOR GOLDWATER.

    BECAUSE MR. CABOT LODGE IS IN THE FOREIGN SERVICE HE IS PROHIBITED FROM TAKING PART IN POLITICAL ACTIVITIES AT HOME, AND UP TO NOW HE HAS NOT DECLARED HIMSELF AS A CANDIDATE TO STAND FOR THE REPUBLICAN'S AGAINST PRESIDENT JOHNSON NEXT NOVEMBER.

    BEFORE LEAVING SOUTH VIETNAM, MR. MCNAMARA SAID THAT THE UNITED STATES WOULD FURNISH "ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE" TO THE GOVERNMENT OF MAJOR-GENERAL NGUYEN KHANH FOR AS LONG AS IT WAS REQUIRED. GENERAL KHANH SAID THAT AFTER HIS TALKS WITH THE U.S. DEFENCE SECRETARY HE WAS CERTAIN OF VICTORY OVER THE VIETCONG.
