    THE WORLD'S FIRST TOURIST SUBMARINE WAS LAUNCHED AT LAKE GENEVA ON THURSDAY (27 FEBRUARY). AFTER UNDERGOING TESTS IT'S EXPECTED TO BE IN SERVICE DURING THE SWISS NATIONAL EXHIBITION WHICH OPENS ON 30TH APRIL AND LASTS FOR SIX MONTHS.

    THE LAUNCHING TOOK PLACE AT BOUVERET ON THE LAKE, AFTER A PRIEST HAD GIVEN THE PROJECT HIS BLESSING. THE SUBMARINE'S DESIGNER AND BUILDER - JACQUES PICCARD -- WAS ABOARD AS THE 160-TON CRAFT SLID DOWN THE IMPROVISED RAILWAY LINE SLIPWAY. THE CEREMONY WAS WATCHED BY PICCARD'S WIFE.

    THE SUBMARINE, OR "MESOSCAPHE", IS NAMED AFTER AUGUSTE PICCARD, THE FAMOUS PIONEER OF STRATOSPHERIC AND UNDERWATER EXPLORATION. IT'S EXPECTED TO CARRY UP TO FORTY TOURISTS AT A TIME, ON TRIPS OF EXPLORATION IN THE DEPTHS OF LAKE GENEVA. IT WILL BE TOWED ACROSS THE LAKE TO ITS OFFICIAL MOORING PLACE NEAR LAUSANNE, WHERE THE TRIALS TAKE PLACE NEXT MONTH.
