THE CONGRESS, HELD EVERY FOUR YEARS BY THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, WAS OPENED BY CARDINAL GREGORY PETER AGAGIANIAN, RUSSIAN-BORN PERSONAL LEGATE OF POPE PAUL, BEFORE A GATHERING OF OVER 100,000 IN THE VAST OPEN AIR CATHEDRAL.

DR. ZAKIR HUSSAIN, THE INDIAN VICE-PRESIDENT, WAS ESCORTED TO THE ALTAR BY VALERIAN CARDINAL GRACIAS. THE GOVERNOR OF MAHARASHTRA, DR. CHERIAN, WAS AMONG DISTINGUISHED GUESTS AT THE OPENING, AND CARDINAL SLIPYI WAS ONE OF THE MANY LEADING ROMAN CATHOLICS IN BOMBAY FOR THE CONGRESS.

THE INDIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM WAS SUNG BEFORE THE PAPAL LEGATE, CARDINAL GREGORY PETER AGAGIANIAN, ARRIVED IN PROCESSION TO THE STRAINS OF THE PAPAL ANTHEM AND "GOB BLESS OUR POPE".

POPE PAUL ARRIVES FROM ROME NEXT WEDNESDAY FOR THREE DAYS AT THE CONGRESS. IT'S HIS SECOND TRIP ABROAD AS PONTIFF, FOLLOWING HIS PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND LAST JANUARY. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE RELIGIOUS GATHERING WILL BE ON THURSDAY WHEN THE POPE CONSECRATES SIX BISHOPS FROM FIVE CONTINENTS.

SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF THE CONGRESS, DR. ZAKIR HUSSAIN TALKED ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN INFLUENCE ON NON-CHRISTIANS OF INDIA. HE SPOKE OF THE HIGH TRADITIONS OF CHRISTIANITY IN INDIA AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN SOCIAL LIFE.

SOME 10,000 PILGRIMS FROM ABOARD ARE IN BOMBAY FOR THE CONGRESS, BUT THIS IS RATHER LESS THAN THE 30,000 EXPECTED. MANY WERE PUT OFF BY FEARS OF AN ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGE WHICH IS STILL ACUTE EVEN WITH THE REDUCED NUMBERS.
