Background: THE CITY OF KADUNA IN NORTHERN NIGERIA BRIEFLY BECAME A MILITARY STRONGHOLD THIS WEEK DURING THE POLITICAL UPHEAVAL IN WHICH THE CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT CEDED POWER TO A MILITARY ADMINISTRATION. IT WAS HERE THAT MAJOR NZEGWU AND A TEAM OF YOUNG NIGERIAN OFFICERS HELD OUT FOR SOME DAYS BEFORE PLEDGING THEIR SUPPORT TO THE NEW FEDERAL ADMINISTRATION SET UP BY THE MILITARY AUTHORITIES IN LAGOS UNDER THE COMMAND OF MAJOR-GENERAL IRONSI. IT WAS FROM KADUNA TOO THAT THE WORLD LEARNT OF THE ASSASSINATION OF THE SARDAUNO OF SOKOTO AND HIS WIFE.

THE SARDAUNA OF SOKOTO WAS PREMIER OF NIGERIA'S NORTHERN REGION. HE WAS CONSIDERED BY SOME TO BE ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL FIGURES IN NIGERIAN POLITICS. ON THE 13TH JANUARY -- THE NIGHT ON WHICH THE UPHEAVAL BEGAN -- JUNIOR OFFICERS HEADED BY MAJOR NZEGWU ATTACKED THE HOME OF THE SARDAUNA. MAJOR NZEGWU HIMSELF TOLD HIS TROOPS FIRING ANTI-TANK GUNS INTO THE BUILDING. HE SAID THE ROOF BLEW UP AND THE WHOLE BUILDING WAS SET ALIGHT. THE MAJOR TOLD HOW THE YOUNG OFFICERS WENT IN SEARCH OF THE SARDAUNA. HE SAID THEY FOUND HIM WITH SOME WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

ON JANUARY 19TH MAJOR NZEGWU -- HIMSELF ONLY 29 -- ANNOUNCED THAT HE AND THE OTHER JUNIOR OFFICERS IN KARDUNA WOULD BE LOYAL TO THE MILITARY REGIME IN LAGOS. MAJOR NZEGWU CLAIMED THAT THE UPRISING HAD BEE PLANNED BY HIMSELF AND FIVE OTHER OFFICERS. HE SAID THEY HAD BEEN ORGANISED TO STRIKE ON JANUARY 10 BUT DELAYED THEIR MOVE WHEN THEY REALISED ARRIVING TO ATTEND THE RHODESIA CONFERENCE.

(IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN NIGERIA TODAY -- SATURDAY -- THAT THE BODY OF THE FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER, SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, HAD BEEN FOUND. SIR ABUBAKAR HAD BEEN MISSING SINCE THE UPRISING BEGAN AND IT WAS WIDELY BELIEVED HE HAD BEEN KIDNAPPED. A STATEMENT BROADCAST BY NIGERIA RADIO SAID THAT THE FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT "ANNOUNCES WITH DEEP REGRET THE DEATH OF SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA -- FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA." ALL OFFICES IN NIGERIA ARE TO CLOSE AND FLAGS WILL BE LOWERED TO HALF MAST.)
