  • Description

FIVE PAINTINGS BY THE VENETIAN PAINTER GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO WERE RECENTLY DISCOVERED AT THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC EMBASSY IN LONDON. THEY ARE TO BE SOLD ON JUNE 27TH AT CHRISTIE'S.

GIOVANNI TIEPOLO IS WIDELY CONSIDERED TO HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE LAST GREAT VENETIAN DECORATORS AND ONE OF THE PUREST EXPONENTS OF THE ITALIAN ROCOCO. HE LIVED FROM 1696 TO 1770, AND BEGAN PAINTING WHEN HE WAS ONLY SEVENTEEN.

THE FIVE PAINTINGS WHICH WERE DISPLAYED TODAY (TUESDAY) ARE CEILING OR WALL DECORATIONS. THE MAIN EXHIBIT "AN ALLEGORY OF VENUS ENTRUSTING EROS TO CHRONOS" IS AN IRREGULAR OVAL CEILING PAINTING, PROBABLY ACQUIRED IN PARIS BEFORE BECOMING THE PROPERTY OF THE PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THE UAR EMBASSY IN LONDON. TO THE LEFT CENTRE, SEATED ON A CLOUD, VENUS CAN BE SEEN, FULL LENGTH WEARING A PINK DRAPERY. BELOW HER IS THE BEARDED FIGURE OF TIME HOLDING A NAKED BABY, CUPID. ABOVE THEM ARE THE THREE GRACES AND TWO DOVES.

THE OTHER FOUR PAINTINGS ARE ALLEGORIES. "FORTITUDE AND WISDOM" WAS PAINTED IN ABOUT 1752; "MERIT AND PRUDENCE", "PEACE AND JUSTICE" AND "TEMPERANCE AND PLENTY" ARE ALL THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN PAINTED AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHEN THEY CAME TO LONDON.
