  • Description

THE FIRST SPACESHIP AND SATURN ??? ROCKET IN THE U.S. APPOLO MANNED LUNAR LANDING PROGRAM WOUND UP A WEEK OF MAJOR TESTING SATURDAY TO SIGNAL THE START OF FINAL PREPARATION FOR AN UNMANNED LAUNCH FEB. 23.

THE LAST BIG TEST FOR THE 224-FOOT SPACE MACHINE--AN ELECTRONIC REHEARSAL OF ITS PLANNED 39-MINUTE SUB-ORBITAL FLIGHT--WAS COMPLETED SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITHOUT AN APPARENT HITCH IN EITHER THE ROCKET OR ITS 17-TON SPACECRAFT.

"IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A GOOD TEST," A SPACE AGENCY SPOKESMAN SAID, BUT HE SAID IT MAY BE A DAY OR TWO BEFORE ALL THE TEST RESULTS ARE CLOSELY EXAMINED.

BARRING ANY UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS, TEAMS OF ENGINEERS AND TECHNICIANS WILL SPEND NEXT WEEK REMOVING TEST CABLES, CHECKING INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS, LOOKING FOR LEAKS AND GETTING RADYSTART THE FINAL COUNTDOWN ON FEB. 21.

THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) HAS BEEN CAREFUL TO POINT OUT, HOWEVER, THAT NEITHER THE APOLLO NOR THE SATURN ??? HAVE FLOWN BEFORE AND LAUNCH DELAYS ARE POSSIBLE.

THE VEHICLE COMPLETED COUNTDOWN REHEARSAL WEDNESDAY NIGHT, AND AS A RESULT OFFICIALS DECIDED THAT MORE TIME WAS NEEDED TO FUEL THE BIG BOOSTER AND THE LAUNCH DATE WAS SET BACK A DAY FROM THE ORIGINAL FEB.22 TARGET.

BUT IF ALL GOES AS PLANNED, THE EIGHT 200,00 FOUND THRUST ENGINES ON THE SATURN IS FIRST STAGE WILL ROAR INTO LIFE SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE FEB, 23 AND SEND UNMANNED APOLLO ON ITS 300-MILE CLIMB INTO SPACE.

APOLLO'S OWN 22,000-POUND THRUST ENGINE WILL THEN RAM THE 11,000 POUND CABIN SECTION BACK TOWARD EARTH IN A HIGH-SPEED NEAT SHIELD TEST. RECOVERY IS PLANNED IN THE SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN 5,300 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE CAPE.

THE FLIGHT, FIRST IN A LONG SERIES OF MISSION LEADING UP THE FIRST MOON FLIGHT IN LATE 1965 OR 1969, WILL BE FOLLOWED BY AT LEAST ONE MORE UNMANNED SUB-TOTAL NOR BEFORE APOLLO IS DECLARED READY TO ORBIT THREE MEN, THE FIRST MANNED ORBITAL SHOT IS OFFICIALLY SET FOR 1981 BUT COULD AS EARLY AS OCTOBER.

SATURDAY'S EXERCISE,CALLED A FLIGHT READINESS TEST, PUT THE ROCKET AND SPACECRAFT THROUGH A SERIES OF THREE MOCK LAUNCHING WITH ACTUAL OPERATIONS BEING SIMULATED ELECTRONICALLY.
