SEQ. 3: REPORTER: "Mr. Springer, what are some of the special features of the Picture 'Phone'?"



SPRINGER: "Well, its a very versatile piece of apparatus - for example, I can zoom in, I can show you that I can get closer than I was before; I can adjust the height, just as much as operating your own television set. Then if I, er, for some reason or other didn't want you to see me, I have a privacy button here that I can cut you out. That is one of our features. Then there's another thing that I'd like to show - we call this the graphics board - if I wanted to show you something that I'm talking about, I can put a brochure under here or I can show a picture of something like, er, this for example is what a telephone used to look like"



REPORTER: "Now, how much does it cost?"



SPRINGER: "Well, on - probably best expressed on a typical intercom installation where we might have nine sets just like this the cost would be about 67 dollars per set, per month. I don't think it'll be too much longer before this will be a standard item in everybody's home, because its the ultimate in personal communication".

Background: The Illinois Bell Telephone Company of Chicago have put on the market the first "See-As-You-Talk Picture Phone Service" which incorporates a television system to the telephone - permitting an audio-visual conversation to be carried out simultaneously.

A television reporter interviewed Mr. Springer, of the manufacturing company, as they gave a practical demonstration of the system:
