  • Description

The Ivory Coast side Stella of Abidjan left themselves in a strong position in the semi-final of the African Cup winners Cup after their 2-2 draw against Jeanne d'Arc of Dakar in Senegal on Sunday (14 September).

Stella have only to win at home in Abidjan in two weeks time to reach the final - and on Sunday's showing they should do so without too much trouble. They looked a more assured and dangerous side than Jeanne d'Arc and deserved their draw.

Jeanne d'Arc started too passively for a home side in a cup match and Stella made them pay for it when Beugre Boly finished off a period of Stella pressure with a sure shot from close in.

It was not until after half time that Jeanne d'Arc gave their 15,000 supporters something to cheer about. They won a penalty and Christophe Sanga sent Stella goalkeeper Youzan the wrong way to equalise.

Boosted by their sudden success Jeanne d'Arc scored the best goal of the match ten minutes later. Seag Sekho met a right wing cross and steered it with his head past Youzan.

This gave Jeanne d'Arc a 2-1 lead but Stella, who had had a territorial advantage for most of the game, then stirred themselves and equalised only three minutes before time. Boly collected a corner and shot his second goal of the match to make the final score 2-2.
