    Tennis -- and top-seeded Rumanian Ilie Nastase defeated Tim Gullikson of the United States after a gruelling five sets in the second round of the men's singles in the French Open Championships in Paris on Thursday (26 May). Nastase finally won 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

    SYNOPSIS: At the start of the fifth set Nastase and Gullikson were tied two sets apiece, so it was still anybody's game. Nastase took the previous set 6-2.

    Gullikson put up a tremendous fight throughout the match. He beat Nastase 6-3 in the second set and 4-6 in the third.

    With the tension mounting in the fifth, tempers flared. Nastase serving.

    After a long, hard rally Gullikson hit the ball wide of the sideline.

    But the 25-year old American was in no mood to hand over the match. Once again he demonstrated his superb skill.

    Nonetheless, Nastase seemed to have the upper hand throughout the last set, and put on the brilliant finishing burst for which he's renowned.

    Gullikson managed to get to the ball but put it out of court.

    Nastase finally took game, set and obviously unpopular match. The score again -- 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

    Nastase was the French champion in 1973, and regarded as the top seed in this series. But the Rumanian seemed to run into more than he had bargained for on Thursday (26 May).
