  • Description

One hundred and seventeen nations began five weeks of discussions on the 'Geneva War Conventions' in Geneva on Wednesday (20 February)."
The Conference's full title is: "The Diplomatic Conference on the Re-affirmation and Development of International Humanitarian Law Applicable in Armed Conflicts."
The main aim of the Conference is to make the conventions more relevant to modern fighting techniques. This was explained by the Swiss Foreign Minister, Pierre Graber when he opened the first session. He said that the evolution of the methods of war, of the experiences gained during recent international and internal wars, make it necessary to add to existing conventions.
But the conference opened on a discordant note when the six-an Israeli delegation walked out after a bitter attack on the Jewish State by Mauretanian President Mokhtar Ould Daddah. He said Israel had "unsurped ancestral lands and caused the dispersal of an entire people.. the Palestinians". Mr. Mordehai Kidron, Deputy Director of Israel's Foreign Ministry, told newsmen after leading his delegation form the chamber: "This is in protest against the mauretanian President's abuse of the privilege of addressing the conference. His language was utterly disgraceful."
The Conference, which is also due to discuss a proposal to vie nationalist fighters prisoner-of-war status, is scheduled to vote later on the admission of African liberation groups. This is demanded by the Organisation of African Unity and the Provisional revolutionary Government of south Vietnam
