  • Description

TWO DAYS OF HEAVY FIGHTING IN THE VILLAGE OF PHU LIEU, 20 MILES FROM THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE SEPARATING NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM CONCLUDED ON THURSDAY (JUNE 23). THE FIERCE FIGHTING INVOLVED SOME 5,000 GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND MORE THAN 1,000 NORTH VIETNAMESE AND VIETCONG FORCES.

A TOTAL OF 331 ENEMY SOLDIERS WERE KILLED IN THE FOUR-PRONGED BATTLE WHICH INVOLVED WAVES OF AIR STRIKES, ARTILLERY AND ARMOURED TROOP CARRIERS MOUNTED WITH HEAVY MACHINEGUNS.

THE CAREFULLY WORKED OUT ATTACK BEGAN ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON (JUNE 22 AS A LINE OF TROOP CARRIERS STREAMED ACROSS THE RICE PADDIES TO THE VILLAGE, ONLY TO BE TEMPORARILY HALTED BY HEAVY FIRE FROM VIETCONG DUG INTO HASTILY CONSTRUCTED POSITIONS IN THE SOFT EARTH.

THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS -- MARINES AND INFANTRYMEN -- SUFFERED LIGHT LOSSES -- A COMPARATIVELY RARE BATTLEFIELD EXPERIENCE FOR GOVERNMENT FORCES.

IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT'S FIRST MAJOR VICTORY IN NORTHERN PROVINCES SINCE THE POLITICAL CRIS ERUPTED IN THE DISSIDENT AREA THREE MONTHS AGO.

THE SCENE OF THE BATTLE WAS A PALM SHADED FORTIFIED VILLAGE NORTH OF HUE, ABOUT 500 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON. THE ENEMY FORCES WERE SAID TO HAVE FOUGHT FROM WELL DUG IN POSITIONS ORIGINALLY DUG IN THE EARLY 1950'S WHEN THE VIETNAMESE WERE FIGHTING THE FRENCH.

THIRTY-SEVEN GUERRILLAS WERE ALSO CAPTURES. FIVE MORTAR LAUNCHERS AND OVER 60 WEAPONS WERE SEIZED FROM THE RETREATING ENEMY FORCES.
