  • Description

United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had two meetings with Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan immediately followed by talks with Egyptian ambassador Ashraf Ghorbal in washington, on Friday (December 7th). Kissinger left the next day on a trip to Europe and the Middle East which should end with the opening of Arab-Israeli peace talks in Geneva on December 18th.

Dayan described his talks as 'productive, optimistic and friendly' but said that he had not come to negotiate and he did not have the authority to make decisions. Although Dayan's departure from the State Department coincided with Ghorbal's arrival, the Defence Minister said they had not actually come fact to face. Dayan later had a meeting with Deputy Defence Secretary William Clements.

The purpose of Kissinger's trip is to patch up relations with the Washington's European NATO partners and to ensure that the Geneva peace talks get off the ground. Egypt has threatened to boycott the talks unless Israel withdraws to the ceasefire lines, but Dayan gave a firm reply on the Israeli position.
