  • Description

The deputy director of a zoo and his assistant were killed and partly eaten by four lions in an animal park in southern France on Sunday (12 January).

The deputy director, Jean-Pierre Berne, entered the cage to drive the lions into the park where they roam freely. His 11-year-old son was outside the enclosures when the lions began to attack. Berne's 17-year-old assistant, Jean-Louis Rodrikuez, tried to assist Berne, but both were torn to pieces within seconds.

Other workers rushed to their aid and the lions, two males and two females, were shot dead.

The lions' regular keeper was away at the time of the attack and the deputy director apparently ignored the usual procedure of herding the lions out of their cage with a van.
