Background: University of Florida sprinter Willie Wilder ran a 5.94 second, 60-yard (metres) dash to set a new record and win the prestige event of the annual Knights of Columbus Track and Field meeting at Richfield, Ohio on Saturday (14 February).

Wilder edged past Reggie Jones of the University of Tennessee to beat the old record of six seconds set the previous year by high school student Houston McTear. McTear withdrew from this year's meeting because of scholastic pressure.

Wilder's win was the highlight of the meeting, held at the coliseum indoor stadium.

Other top performances of the night were made by Tom Hill, of the U.S. Army who won the hotly-contested 60-yard (metres) high hurdles, in 7.02 seconds. He narrowly beat defending hurdles champion Danny Smith and Frenchman Guy Drut.

Gene White of the Penn Athletic club successfully defended his high jump title with a seven-foot (2 metres) leap. Four other jumpers cleared the height, but lost to White on countback.

Dan Ripley of the Pacific Coast club and Wladislaw Kozakiewicz of Poland both missed three attempts at an indoor amateur pole vault record of 18 feet four inches (5.6 metres) after each had cleared 18 feet (5.5 metres). Ripley won the event because he had fewer misses.

World record holders Villanova University won the two-mile (3.3 kms) relay.
