The fifth race of this years competition for the world championship in Moto-Cross took place in Trzec, Yugoslavia on Sunday (21 May). This race was for motorcycles in the 250cc class on a cross-country course. The track featured steep hills, some up to 45 degrees, and hair-pin curves. The general conditions for the race were not good. A heavy rainfall just before the start turned the track into a sea of mud. Conditions got so had that the second heat of the race had to be cut short by ten minutes.

The Belgian team of Joel Robert and Sylvain Geboers repeated their first and second place finish of just two weeks before at the Grand Prix in the netherlands. Robert is five-time world champion, and this win puts him firmly in the lead in this years competition.

Kalevi vahkonen from Finland was the third place finisher. The field of racers had 41 competitors from 16 nations.

SYNOPSIS: Forty-one riders from sixteen nations competed Sunday in the Grand Prix Moto-Cross of Yugoslavia. This competition for motorcycles of the 250 cc class was held just after a very heavy rainfall. The riders were forced to contend with mud on the course as well as the usual steep hills and treacherous turns.

The bad track conditions not only held the speed down but caused several motorcycles to drop out of competition with engines stalled by the mud and water.

Moto-Cross races are held in two parts. Each part is forty minutes long. But the track conditions became so bad that officials had to cut short the second heat. The riders constantly fought for control of their machines.

This Moto-Cross race was the fifth such competition of the year. Each rider was out to win the race and to accumulate points for the title of world champion.

Hakan Anderson of Swedan negotiated the difficult course well, but it was the Belgian team that took top honours. Five-time world champion Joel Robert was the first man to race across the finish. As he crossed the line he went onto one wheel as a victory sign.

This was Robert's second first place finish in the last three, world championship, Moto-Cross races, Robert's team-mate Sylvain Geboers came in second, and Kalevi Vahkonen of Finland was third.
