  • Description

ELEVEN WORLD FLIGHTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED BY BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS CORPORATION IN THE PAST TWO DAYS, FOLLOWING THE DISCOVERY OF HAIRLINE CRACKS IN THE TAIL SECTIONS OF SIX OF ITS BOEING 707 JET LINERS. THE WHOLE OF THE CORPORATION'S FLEET OF 19 BOEING 707s ARE BEING INSPECTED FOR SIMILAR METAL FAILURES.

THE CRACKS - REPORTED TO BE DUE TO METAL FATIGUE - WERE DISCOVERED DURING THE INSPECTION OF TAIL SECTIONS BEING CARRIED OUT AT THE REQUEST OF THE AIRCRAFTS' MANUFACTURERS.

SIMILAR CHECKS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT BY AIRLINES ALL OVER THE WORLD. ABOUT 300 BOEING 707s ARE IN THE SERVICE ON INTERNATIONAL AIR ROUTES.

IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN WASHINGTON YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT HAIRLINE CRACKS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE TAIL ASSEMBLIES OF 22 BOEING 707s IN SERVICE WITH UNITED STATES AIR LINES.

THE CHECKS WERE ORDERED FOLLOWING THE CRASH NEAR TOKYO OF A BOAC 707, WITH THE LOSS OF 124 LIVES, IN FEBRUARY. BUT, BOTH BOAC AND THE BOEINGS MANUFACTURERS HAVE STATED THAT THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT A FAILURE IN THE TAIL SECTION OF THE PLANE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRASH.

THE CRACKS THAT HAVE BEEN FOUND ARE AROUND BOLTS HOLDING PART OF THE MAIN TAILPIECE TO THE AIRCRAFT'S FUSELAGE. THEY ARE SO SMALL THEY CAN BE SEEN ONLY WITH THE AID OF MAGNIFYING GLASSES.

WHERE CRACKS ARE FOUND, THE AIRCRAFT IS BEING TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE UNTIL REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE FLOWN TO BRITAIN BY THE PLANE-MAKERS IN THE UNITED STATES.
