  • Description

Israel and Egypt today (January 18) signed the agreement for the disengagement of their forces along the Suez Canal.

The agreement was signed at Kilometre 101 on the Suez-Cairo road by Egypt's Major-General Mohammed Abdel Ghani Gamasy and Israel's Lieutenant-General David Elazar -- the Chiefs of Staff of the two sides.

Under the six-point agreement, Israel will withdraw from the west bank of the Suez Canal, while the Egyptians will reduce their forces on the east bank.

The agreement was laboriously worked out by the two sides with the aid of the United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, who flew back and forth between Aswan and Jerusalem in the week before the signing.

The signing of the agreement came almost three months after the end of the war in October last year, and was the first major step towards a permanent settlement of the long-standing Middle East conflict.

After the signing ceremony, Israel's Lieutenant-General Elazar said he thought it was a good agreement.
